The "doomed astronauts" project were a series of characters I made for my first (shipped) Videogame title, "P. Ackman: Space Ghosts", which was really just a glorified unlicensed Pac-Man remake, where I attempted to answer the question: "what would happen if Pac-Man was made for a modern audience".
The characters are loosely based on a t-shirt design called "The Madness of Mission Six" by Artist Travis Pitt, mixed in with 80's pop culture and film aesthetics, particularly Space Odyssey. And with those elements I set out to create a series of characters directly inspired by Pac-Man and the ghosts, where, while retaining some of the "personality" of the original ghosts from the 1980 game, I also added RPG character class elements, such as tank, ranger, mage, paladin, etc. This in turn ended up creating completely original, rich characters that enhance both, gameplay and story.
There is no high resolution mesh for this character set, since every single detail was "sculpted" in Photoshop as a height map, that subsequently was turned into a normal map for the detail (The mesh used in UE never used a height map, only normals), so basically the hi-res version was always holding edges and Blender's creased edges, baked into a Multi-Resolution modifier. All 5 of the primary characters were developed in only 3 days due to this particular modeling method.
